Bayer Leverkusen’s Unbelievable Bundesliga Title Victory: Xabi Alonso Shares Secrets of Handling Pressure
Bayer Leverkusen’s fairy-tale season has reached a new high as they clinched their first-ever Bundesliga title, and manager Xabi Alonso has revealed how he guided the team through the immense pressure.
When Alonso took over midway through the season, Leverkusen were fighting relegation. However, the former Real Madrid and Liverpool star turned the team’s fortunes around, leading them to a remarkable triumph over the mighty Bayern Munich.
In an interview with ESPN, Alonso explained how he handled the weight of history and expectations that came with Leverkusen’s quest for their first league title.
“Well, it feels great because I have this feeling that this is not just for us, this is for so many people that have been chasing this dream for so many years. I have in mind the old coaches, Christoph Daum, Klaus Augenthaler, and Roger Schmidt. They were here, and they are a part of it as well, and for me, it’s so great to bring success and to be part of this success with this team.”
Alonso said.
Alonso also addressed the “Neverkusen Curse” that had haunted the club in the past, admitting that the weight of history wasn’t as heavy on him as it was on others. “Because I was not here for so long, that was not in my veins so deep, so probably I was lighter. The weight of history wasn’t that heavy inside me.”
The Spaniard’s calm and composed approach helped the players believe in their abilities, as Leverkusen overcame expectations and clinched the title with five games to spare.
“For sure, we have overcome the expectations and to play and to win the Bundesliga, five games to go with our numbers, with the way we have played, with the way we have totally deserved most of the results, it’s unbelievable.”
Alonso added.
Leverkusen’s triumph is a testament to Alonso’s managerial prowess and the team’s collective effort. As they now set their sights on the Europa League and DFB Pokal, the Bundesliga champions will be looking to complete a historic treble and cement their place as one of the most remarkable success stories in recent football history.
